An abbreviated genealogy that isn’t duplicated anywhere else in Scripture
1 Chronicles 1:1–4: “Adam, Seth, Enosh, Cainan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.”
1 Chronicles begins with a list of names— an abbreviated genealogy that isn’t duplicated anywhere else in Scripture.
It starts with Adam and traces the genealogy of the tribes up to the time of the author of 1 Chronicles.
The list is impressive. There are 200 proper names in the first chapter alone!
This genealogy reveals several things to us.
That is why Ancestry.com has become the largest for-profit genealogy company in the world, because of people’s growing interest in tracing their family history.
We should remember that each name listed in this book represents someone’s story.
When we check the ‘Route Map” of the genealogy of Jesus, we can see that the godly line of Adam’s third son Seth that eventually led to the promised Messiah.
This genealogy is a summary of God’s love spread over many people.
Also these lists of names show us that the God who made us is also the God who knows us.
He knows us by name and is familiar with every detail of our lives.
I heard a saying that:………..
………….. “When Satan tries to remind you of your past, remind him of his future.”
But here we learn the opposite concept of it: WHEN SATAN TRIES TO INFLUENCE YOUR FUTURE, REMIND HIM WHERE YOU CAME FROM.
And WHERE DID WE COME FROM?
WE CAME FROM THE HAND OF A CREATOR GOD WHO KNIT YOU TOGETHER IN OUR MOTHER’S WOMB. (Ps 139:13).
We came from the King of the Universe, who has a very large Book of Life in heaven—and our name is in it (Rev 3:5).
We came from the Great Sustainer, who has a huge family tree—and we are one of the branches on it (Jn 15:5).
Any time when we are tempted to feel unloved or disconnected, God wants us to remember where we came from.
So ….. whenever we’re wondering what the future holds, remember that the One we came from, is the same One we’re going to, and He’s so glad to have us as part of His family.
