The author of 1 and 2 Chronicles, often called “the Chronicler, used Israel’s history as a lesson for an audience in need of guidance and encouragement. The Chronicler begins with the genealogies of Israel, and also by including Gentiles in the genealogies, the Chronicler shows that Israel was to be a light to the nations.
The Chronicler counsels the Israelites through repeated historical examples to relearn the importance of prayer and humility before the Lord.

The importance of genealogy in Israel

The Jews tenaciously valued their pedigrees. They were used for the purposes of:
1) Tribal Location:
After the conquest of Canaan the land was divided into tribal boundaries. Numbers 26 explain how one had to know his tribe, his family line and his father’s house so that he could be identified in the right location in the land.

2) Transaction of Land:
According to Ruth 3 and 4, transfer of property required accurate knowledge of the family tree, so that they could keep tribal land within the tribe.

3) Testing of Lineage:
After 70 years of Babylonian Captivity, many of the Jews started coming back to Israel. Many of them were claiming to be priests from the tribe of Levi. Their claims had to be proven on the basis of their genealogy (Ezra 2:62). It is because God was very serious about having only Levites serving as priests (Num 1:50-53)

4) Taxation Laws:
Later, in the time of Christ, the Romans used the Jewish genealogies for taxation. So the people were to register their names according to their parental ancestry (Luke 2:1-4)

📝 The Jews highly valued their pedigree. Paul, identified himself with Israel by claiming himself to be the seed of Abraham from the tribe of Benjamin (Rom 11: 1)

📝 In NT the genealogy of Jesus Christ is recorded in Matthew and Luke but the counting of genealogy is reverse: Matthew’s genealogy is coming down (from Abraham to Jesus) through Joseph where as Luke traces Jesus (back to Adam) through Mary.
One begins with Jesus, the other ends with Jesus ✝

💕 Beloved Church, the book of 1Chronicles reminds us that we can be confident that God moves in the details of history. His deepest desire is TO DRAW US OUT OF THE EXILE OF OUR SINS AND INTO A LIFE OF WORSHIP WITH HIM.
🔖 GENEALOGY is needed to establish one’s identity. But our IDENTITY is in CHRIST.
🔖 The Bible says, “Yet to all who RECEIVED HIM, to those who BELIEVED in HIS NAME, he gave the right to become CHILDREN OF GOD ” (John 1:12)

🔖 “Now if we are children, then we are HEIRS— HEIRS OF GOD and co-heirs with Christ..” and “by Him we cry Abba Father” (Rom 8: 15-17)

Importance of genealogies

We are all descended from Noah, the fearless preacher who found favor with God.we can all claim descent from Adam, made in the image of God to have fellowship with Him. Yet Noah became shamefully drunk and Adam:s disobedience brought lasting sorrow to his family.

One reason God has given us this long geneology to show us God is interested in individuals. The entries in God’s book of life are individuals. God knows all about our family tree_ way back to Adam.

He knows our entire life history.we are not lost in the billions on the face of the earth, but individuals whom God knows by name.!. God knows every detail of our life. He knows the number of hairs on our head.So we have to live lives, carefully obeying God.

Importance of genealogy

1 . Evidence of existence:
Information is a powerful tool.
Many aethists have tried their best to prove that Bible is wrong. But couldn’t succeed.
Genealogy is an open challenge for any aethists.

The Bible says faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). And without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). So in order to witness to an atheist, you must use the Bible. He may not want to read it, but you can slip it in from time to time in your conversation.

2 . Secondly the genealogy in the Bible reveals us the History.
What is history?
HIS – STORY – JESUS
The New Testament provides two accounts of the genealogy of Jesus, one in the Gospel of Matthew and another in the Gospel of Luke. Matthew starts with Abraham, while Luke begins with Adam.
How intellectually compelling, complex, and profound the gospel was. It attracts many, but only those who are convinced can be saved.
Once I happened to listen to a testimony of a person, saying, “I was given a new testament Bible, the very first 16 verses, from Matthew the gospel, the genealogy from Abraham to Jesus has convinced me to accept Jesus as my personal saviour. “
That’s the power of genealogy. He didn’t read the whole Bible to be saved.

Once RRK Murty, a staunch Brahmin Hindu, started to read Bible to find mistakes out if it, but surprisingly, the Bible started to find mistakes in him, he was convinced and received the salvation and became a great man of God.

Genealogy is a powerful tool given to us by God in the Bible to convince the confused people.
