The Sabbath Day

(Origin, Ordination & Order)
The concept of Sabbath Day can be traced out in the Creation Events. Although the word “Sabbath” is not used here, the Hebrew verb translated ‘rested’ (Gen 2:2) is the origin of the noun ‘Sabbath’.
According to Gen 2:2, God rested in the seventh day, not because he was weary, but because nothing formless or empty remained. His creation work was completed, and it was totally effective, absolutely perfect (“.. it was very good “). It did not have to be Repeated, Repaired or Revised.
God has a divine plan and purpose for creating Adam on the sixth day and not on the fourth or fifth day.

โœ… God wants Adam to enjoy His provisions from Day I to Day V of his creation.
โœ… The next day after the sixth day is the day of rest.
โœ… The seventh day is the day of blessing, and God made it holy.
โœ… The first man had the privilege to enter into a rest on the first day, which was designated as holy.
โœ… The first occurrence of the word “sabbath” is recorded in โœ’ Exodus 16:23 “,Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord

โœ… The first record of obligatory Sabbath observance by the Israelites is recorded in โœ’ Exodus 16:22-30

โœ… At the time of giving the Law, God said, Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy.. โœ’ Exodus 20:8. Israelites were to remember the event(Exodus16) where / how they approach/ encountered God’s heavenly provision (the manna). God blessed the Sabbath Day and made it holy. Thus, the Sabbath became a sign of the covenant between God and Israel at Mount Sinai. โœ’ Exodus 31:13,17.

โœ… In Deuteronomy 5, Moses reiterated the Ten Commandments. It was needed for Israel’s New Generation. It is interesting to note here that while referring to the fourth commandment, the phrase begins with — Observe the Sabbath Day.. and ends with the same phrase (v 15b). There is an urgency, and the Israelites are to obey and practice.

โœ… The Pharisees kept a perverted Sabbath in Jesus’s day, for they had turned the Sabbath into a stern, hard, ritualistic day and hedged with strict limitations.

โœ But Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath, said that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath โœ’ Mark 2:27
โœ Jesus further said, “It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath โœ’ Matthew 12:12

The Sabbath was for the Jews and not for us today. Isaiah dictates the true way to keep the Sabbath Day (Is 58:13-14) :
~ To delight in the Lord.
~ To cease from your own pleasure
~ To make it a day that honors the Lord.
