Noah became an instrument of restoration

2nd Day : 16-07-2020

🔹Genesis 9:21 – When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent.

Well, the above verse is referring to Noah. That same Noah, who found favour in the eyes of the LORD (Genesis 6:8), at a time when every inclination of the thoughts of human heart was only evil all the time which deeply troubled the heart of the Creator. He was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time and he walked faithfully with God (Gen 6:9). He was the same Noah who in building the ark did everything just as God commanded (Gen 6:22). He became instrumental in restoring the creation command, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth…” Those were the same word spoken to Adam and Eve.

Now after the Flood he became the first tiller of the soil and keeper of vineyards. And sadly that same righteous and blameless Noah, ‘when he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent.’

This is the first instance in the Biblical narrative about an individual with his folly of drunkenness. And this state was followed by Ham doing nothing to cover his drunken bare father, instead told his two elder brothers about their father’s nakedness. The two elder sons covered their father with a garment walking in backward to prevent themselves from seeing the shameful state of their drunk father. And after this instance, the Bible gives no further account of Noah’s personal life.

🤔Reflections:

📎The Bible shows the righteous as well as the flawed part of human. No exception, that Noah became an instrument of restoration.

📎The present state of walking with God is never to be taken as a onetime-once-for-all achievement. Thus, the word ‘SANCTIFICATION’ becomes so relevant in the Christian faith walk.

📎Can drunkenness be ever justified, then and now?

📎If we take little further, apart from alcoholic drunkenness can there be any other type of drunkenness which might lay us naked and bare before our children? (In the view of one of the meaning of drunkenness as alteration of the normal condition of an individual and significantly reduce his capacity for rational action and conduct or reduce a man to a temporary insanity.)

📎And it seems like Ham was gossiping about his father’s nakedness. Can we understand the gravity of this action of Ham when we are supposed to behave respectfully towards our parents, even while in disagreements?

God bless! 🌷
