Resolution in the Right Spirit
(๐Ÿ“– Jeremiah 34:8-22)

Releasing Hebrew slaves was built on God’s law. They are to be released after varying periods of time.
๐Ÿ”– According to Exodus 21:2 , individual slaves were to be freed during their seventh year of servitude .
๐Ÿ”– Deuteronomy 15:12-18 commands masters to supply their former slaves with resources for life after liberation.
๐Ÿ”– Leviticus 25:8-54 gives a detail note on the Year of Jubilee, which occur once in every 50 years , where a comprehensive programme of Debt Cancellation and complete restoration of each family’s ancestral property takes place.

However, by Jeremiah’s time many of these laws were not being observed – not until the Babylonian army began its siege of Jerusalem. The text said that the “people agreed to free their slaves; they set them free but afterwards they changed their minds and took back the slaves again” (v 9-11 ; 15-16). This was a serious offence. For many Jews “Releasing of Slaves ” was a challenge, and they made resolutions / promises to carry it out before the actual time Schedule. Today’s passage reveals that they partially obeyed, and later on they were back to the slavery business.

DO WE BEHAVE IN A SIMILAR WAYโ“
To most of us New Year is a moment to make Resolutions (two extreme habits) – to shun evil practices and to adopt good and noble things/values.
Are we true to our resolutions /promisesโ“

๐Ÿ“Œ We may go so far as to make to make promises to God about what we will do if He gets us out of our bond.

๐Ÿ“Œ Are those promises really motivated by a true love for God and a sincere pursuit of justiceโ“

๐Ÿ™ Lord , help us to remember to love and serve you at all times, not just when we are facing difficulties. ๐Ÿ›
