Who is Jesus? The Conqueror, Preacher, Healer

Luke.2:18.

We must not cease to wonder at the great marvels of our God.
It would be very difficult to draw a line between holy wonders and real worship, for when the soul is overwhelmed with the Majesty of God ‘a Glory, though it may not express itself in song.
It silently adores.
Our Incarnate God is to be worshipped as “Wonderful “.
God should consider us,, the fallen creatures, instead of sweeping us away with the bosom of destruction.
He Himself undertakes us.
He is our Redeemer.
He paid His ransom price.
It is indeed marvelous.
To each believer redemption is most marvelous, as He views it in relation to Himself.
It is a miracle of Grace indeed, that Jesus should forsake the Thrones and Royalties above, to suffer ignominiously below for us.
Holy wonder will lead us to grateful worship and heartful Thanksgiving.

Luke 3

Prophecy. God’s message did not come to any of the “great leaders” of that day. It came to John the Baptist, the last and the greatest of God’s prophets. John’s ministry was foretold by the prophet Isaiah (Vs.4-6; Isaiah 40:3-5). John was a prophet who was the subject of prophecy!

Ministry. John was privileged to prepare the nation for the Messiah and then present Him to them. John preached against sin and told the people to repent. He gave specific instructions to his converts on how to put their faith into practice. He was inspecting fruit (Vs.8), getting to the root of sin (Vs.9), and warning about wrath to come (Vs. 7, 17). Would you accept that kind of ministry?

Mystery. The Son of God is baptized; the Spirit lights upon Him like a dove; and the Father speaks His approval from heaven. Never forget that all of the holy Trinity is involved in your salvation (Ephesians 1:1-14).

History. The genealogy (Vs.23-38) is that of Mary whose father was Heli. Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus, though that was what people assumed (John 1:45; 6:42). The genealogy of Joseph is found in Matthew 1. It was unusual to pay attention to the genealogy of a woman, which shows Dr. Luke’s concern for neglected people. Gentile history (Vs.1) and Jewish history (Vs. 23-38) are in the hands of Almighty God, fulfilling His purposes.

Luke 4

The Conqueror (1-13). You can be filled with the Spirit (Vs.1) and obedient to God’s will and still experience temptations and trials. Because He faced the enemy and conquered, Jesus can identify with you in your temptations and can help you win the victory (Hebrews 2:17-18). It is not a sin to be tempted, for Jesus was tempted; but it is a sin to yield. Satan’s promise is, “All will be yours” (Vs.7); but in Jesus Christ, you already have all things (1 Corinthians 3:21-23), and Satan can give you nothing.

The Preacher (14-30). The Spirit not only gives us victory but He leads us (Vs.14) and empowers us for service (Vs.18). The text for our Lord’s message was Isaiah 61:1-2. It describes what Jesus came to do and what He is still doing in lives today. The people in the synagogue wanted a comforting sermon, not a convicting sermon. When Jesus mentioned God’s grace to the Gentiles (Vs. 23-27), the people became angry and threw Him out! They forfeited His blessings because they rejected His word.

The Healer (31-44). Jesus fulfilled His commission (Vs.18- 19) by bringing healing and deliverance to the poor and needy by the authority of His word. Had He not overcome the devil privately, Jesus could not have defeated him publicly. While the preaching of the Word was His major ministry (Vs. 42-44), Jesus had compassion on the sick and healed them. We may not have the power to heal, but we can comfort and assist those who are needy; and we can do it in Jesus’ name (Matthew 25:34-40).

“Luke 4:1-4”
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’
During this 40-day period, Jesus chooses to go without eating. Naturally, Satan tempts Jesus with food, wanting to cause Jesus to make the needs of his body first priority.
When Satan tried to tempt Jesus into making hunger the priority, Jesus responded by quoting scripture. His example of this dependence upon the word of the Father is to teach us how to respond to the strong pull of temptation.
What are we going to trust? Will we trust the everchanging cravings of our body or the never-changing instructions of our God?
