Less is more

Proverbs 10

❇️ When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise (v19)

❇️ The Wiseman cautions us of the excessive use of our tongue which is sure to land us in trouble. He further suggests talking less is being wise. This means one has to be cautious of the quantum of words and the quality of words spoken.

❇️ Jesus says in Mat.12:34 For out of the abundance of heart the mouth speaks. This shows whatever fills our heart decides what we speak. It could be either wisdom or folly in our heart which would decide what words we speak.

❇️ Thus heart of the matter is the matter of our heart.Heart is a seat of our thoughts, emotions and our desires. To speak the right words we need to engage in right thoughts, right emotions and right desires in our heart.

❇️ In order to speak the right words we need to be careful with both our heart and mouth.Only way we can prevent us from using words that cause us to sin is that when the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are acceptable to our Lord (Psa.19:14) 🙏🏽

❇️ List of some acceptable words to our Lord.
▪️ Timely word – Psa.15:23
▪️ Aptly spoken word – Pro.25:11
▪️ Word of grace – Act.20:32
▪️ Words of truth & reason – Act.26:25
▪️ Word of reconciliation – 2 Cor.5:19
▪️ Word of life – Php. 2 :16
▪️ Words of eternal life – Jn.6:68
▪️ Words that sustain the weary – Isa.50:4

❇️ Let us keep the following in our mind to safeguard our tongue from speaking words that cause us to sin.
✅ Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Pro.18:21)
✅ The tongue is the only tool that grows sharper with constant use – Washington Irving.
✅ Men will have to give account on the day of judgement for every careless word they have spoken (Mat.12:36)
✅ Insights learnt:

▪️ Speak less and speak right
▪️ Right words spoken are
more a product of heart
than of the skill

Day 144— Proverbs 16

In this chapter we study about the different types of human heart.
A prepared heart (1-3, 23) is a heart that receives God’s truth and submits to God’s will. Since the mouth speaks what the heart has treasured up, the Lord can guide your words when your heart is prepared (Matthew 10:19-20).

A proud heart (5, 18-19). Pride is one sin that God especially hates. It leads to all kinds of trouble and robs you of the blessing of the Lord.

A purposeful heart (7, 9, 25). If your heart is not devoted to God’s purposes, then it will lead you astray. Take time to think and pray, meditate on the Word, and make your plans; and then trust the Lord to guide you.

A prudent heart (20-24). When wisdom is your food and drink, then you will be able to make prudent decisions. A prudent heart is revealed by lips that speak words of wisdom.

A perverse heart (27-30). What is in the heart eventually comes out in the life, and the life described here is anything but beautiful or useful. No wonder Proverbs 4:23 is in God’s Word! Are you heeding it?
