Search me O God and know my heart

📓 The Book of Psalms 📓

♥️ Psalm 139-142 ♥️

📖 Search me O God and know my heart, Try me and know my thoughts (v23).

David prayed that God would examine him and see the integrity of his devotion and keep him true. God knew every action, every undertaking, his pursuing, every thought and every spoken word by David. The whole creation offers no hiding place from the spirit and presence of God. God’s thoughts towards him were precious.

He praised God that he was fearfully and wonderfully made. He prayed that God may lead him into the way everlasting. A prayer for deliverance from the plots and slander of his enemies. He prayed that God would recue him from the vipers and protect him from the proud and wicked hunters. He prayed that their evil plots may fail and recoil on their own heads.

He was assured that the Lord would secure justice for the poor and help the needy. The righteous would always praise God and live before Him. All his life David had his wicked enemies chasing him to kill him. His prayer was always for deliverance from the wicked. He prayed and asked God to watch over the words he speaks and also to keep his heart pure.

The disciplining blows and rebukes of the righteous were kindness, love and true acts of friendship for him. He prayed that God would protect him from the traps and snares of the wicked. Listen to my cry, I am in desperate need, was David’s mournful prayer. He was powerless, alone and without refuge. God alone was the sustainer and preserver of his life. So he prayed for rescue.

♦️ Psalm 143-146 ♦️

📖 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.

David knew his own failures, he pleaded that God may not judge him but judge the enemies’ harsh attacks. He remembered God’s past acts of deliverance which encouraged his appeal. God’s unfailing love enabled him to trust in Him. Hiding himself in God, he asked the Lord to teach him to do His will and lead him with His good spirit. Blessed are the poor whose God blessed because David had God as his Lord.

A hymn of praise to the Lord for his mighty acts and virtues. The Psalmist meditates on God’s wonderful and awesome works. He celebrates the goodness and righteousness of God. The Lord is gracious, loving and good to all. He is faithful to all his promises. The Lord is always near to all those who call upon him in truth and fulfills the desires of those who fear him. Every creature must praise his holy name for ever and ever.

📖 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.

The Lord is faithful, helps the oppressed, feeds the hungry, sets the prisoners free, heals the sick, loves the righteous, sustains the fatherless and the widow and cares for the aliens. He frustrates the ways of the wicked. This gracious God needs to be praised continually.
