Hypocrisy and deception are sinful and destructive

Acts 5:1-11 (Ananias and Sapphira)

There are positive and negative experiences in family life. For Ananias and Sapphira, it was deadly. They agreed to lie to the church about the purchase price of a piece of property.

The issue was not what they did with their profit. They gave most of the money to the church, but that together they lied about it.

Ananias and Sapphira died because they lied. Certainly hypocrisy and deception are sinful and destructive.

Be willing to challenge your spouse if he or she asks you to do something unethical or illegal.

There will be times when we slip, make unwise choices and sin anyway.

A man is commanded to yield to the voice of the Holy Spirit, he is never forced by God, to do so and a woman is commanded to submit to her husband, she is never forced by her husband to do so. Both are to work as one, all for God’s glory.

Acts 5

Pretending (1-11). Barnabas’s gift (4:36-37) exposed the sin of Ananias and Sapphira, just as Mary’s gift exposed Judas’s sin (John 12). The couple lied to the Spirit, to the church, and to Peter; and it cost them their lives. Their sin was not in taking money from God but in pretending to be something they were not.

Obeying (12-16). Dealing with sin in the church often results in new power for the church. Can you imagine a church so spiritual that people were afraid to join with them? Even Peter’s shadow had power!

Opposing (17-32). Because the Sadducees could not tolerate evidences of resurrection power, they arrested the apostles again and told them to be quiet. “We ought to obey God rather than men” (Vs.29) is the only position to hold when you have the Word of God on your side. Be sure it is conviction and not just opinion.

Hesitating (33-42). Gamaliel advised neutrality, which means avoiding the truth and letting Satan move in (Matthew 12:30, 43-45). With all the evidence they had seen, the council’s neutrality was actually dishonesty. If you followed Gamaliel’s advice in any area of life, it would lead to paralysis and then death.

Acts 5 : 14-15

“And all the more believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly added to their number, to such an extent that they carried sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on any one of them.”

✝️ Jesus had told the apostles that He would be sending the ‘ Holy Spirit ‘ upon them so that they could be His witnesses all over the earth. All the apostles along with Mother Mary and the other followers of Jesus stayed together in one place and prayed together till the Pentecost Day.

🔥 On the Pentecost Day, they all received the gift of the Holy Spirit which appeared like tongues of fire and were distributed and rested on all of them. They all spoke with other tongues and praised God for all the wonderful things He had done. (Acts 2:3-4,11)

💘 Peter once who was afraid and denied Jesus, was now filled with a new power and courage to witness Christ Jesus and performed many miracles and wonders in the Holy Name of Jesus

Many people came to believe in the Lord and joined the apostles and God increased their number day by day.

🔥 Peter was filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and healed many people of their sicknesses and also proclaimed the ‘Good News’ about Christ the Lord. The people believed that even the shadow of Peter could heal the sick, so they laid sick people on the streets on cots and pallets so that when Peter passed by, his shadow ( power of Christ Jesus through the Holy Spirit) would fall on the sick and heal them, such was the great faith of the people.

✝️ Lord Jesus, strengthen and deepen our Faith in You and increase Your power and love in us so that it may never be shaken in moments of trials. Let our faith in You , lead others to believe and to accept You as the only ‘ Saviour ‘ of their souls. Let Your power and love in us heal the sick in mind, body and soul. Amen.
